I believe in a games-based approach to practice and development.
Here are a few reason why:
Practice is the MOST important part of what a coach does to affect the outcome of games.
In order to be successful, we have to have GREAT PRACTICES.
Drills do not carry over well to success in games.
Instead of using drills, we will use a games-based approach.
Small sided games are great for ALL players to get repetitions
Organize Practice in SEGMENTS. Gotta make sure players and coaches know what is going on.
Use Full Court Drills as Conditioning instead of the long distance running. Basketball is a game of SPRINTS. Not long steady running. You want to develop SPEED. When you do long runs you develop kids that coast by doing 2-3 mile runs.
Examples of Full Court Alternative Drills:
Cycles Drill (1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 1-5)
2 and 3 Man Full Court Series
BLOB to SPREAD BREAK
Every DRILL has a PURPOSE that relates to your OFFENSE or DEFENSE strategy. Because of limited practice time. Gotta be detailed with planning. (Exception is short ENERGY Drills: Tonganoxie, Competition SHooting...etc.)
